Key: (D) = Carries Dilute, (Ch) = Carries Chocolate
The Chocolate gene is recessive, which means both parents must be either visual or directly carry to produce chocolate or lilac kittens. A possible carrier is when chocolate or lilac is somewhere in the pedigree. Only breeding will prove if the cat is a direct carrier.
When putting a Chocolate male to a Chocolate Tortie female, all red males and cream males (if they carry dilute) will be red homozygous chocolate, or cream homozygous lilac. This also works with the reverse of the dilute colours, ie: Lilac male to Lilac Cream female.
